The producer price of light lamb increased by 6 percent, and that of heavy lamb by 3 percent
According to data from the European Commission, the European Union’s sheep and goat imports (live animals and meat) were 28,000 tons in January-April 2023, which represents an 11 percent increase compared to the same period of the previous year (the figure does not include the quantity delivered from the United Kingdom).
The largest supplier was New Zealand with an 85 percent share. The amount of sheep and goat meat and live animals sold on the international market (30 thousand tons) decreased by almost 2 percent compared to January-April 2022 (the figure does not include the amount of exports to the United Kingdom). In the European Union, the price of light lamb developed in accordance with seasonal effects in the first twenty-eight weeks of the year, expressed in euros, it was 5.5 percent higher compared to the same period of the previous year.
The price of heavy lamb rose by 2 percent at the same time. According to KSH data, the volume of Hungary’s live lamb exports did not change significantly (3.8 thousand tons), while its value increased by 3 percent (to HUF 6.5 billion) in January-April 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year.
The volume of live lamb imports decreased by 77 percent (6.8 tons) in the first four months of 2023 compared to the volume of the previous year. According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of light and heavy lamb in Hungary increased in January-June 2023 compared to the average price of t he same months of 2022. The average price of light lamb was HUF 1,573/kilogram (+6 percent), heavy lamb was HUF 1,451/kilogram (+3 percent) in the first six months.
