The future has already started! – Auchan’s complex sustainability strategy
This summer Auchan Magyarország established a special directorate for implementing its environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy. The company wants to reduce CO2 emission from store operations by 46% and to cut its non-store emissions by 25%. Objectives also include achieving full carbon neutrality in store operations by 2043.
This strategy is based on three pillars: society, environment, and the promotion of healthy eating and the reduction of food waste. Auchan has been employing people with disabilities for more than 10 years – at the moment there are several hundred of disabled workers. Auchan has substituted single-use packaging materials with green solutions, and the retailer’s product selection is now also more sustainable. Solar panels generate green energy for stores. The Auchan Foundation regularly donates essential food products to people in need. Since 2015 stores saved nearly 4,000 tonnes of food, which ended up in poor households through the Hungarian Food Bank Association.
Ildikó Varga-Futó, CSR director of Auchan Magyarország: “Recently we have banned single-use plastic bags in Auchan stores. Our product selection now includes second-hand clothes and phones, plus several sustainable products. We hope that shoppers will join us on the path to sustainability.” (x)
