Sustainability is present in the daily life of farmers
We asked Balázs Győrffy, president of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) about sustainability in the sector.

Balázs Győrffy
president
NAK
– How does sustainability manifest in agriculture?
– First and foremost let me stress that everyone working in agriculture and forestry is aware of the importance of sustainability. Many hardcore green organisations blame agriculture for climate change, but this claim is far from being true. As for the chamber, NAK is dedicated to promoting sustainable solutions in farming.
– An excellent example is this year’s NAK Arable Land Days programme, where there was even a sustainability educational trail.
– Yes, it was a good way to inform the nearly 20,000 trade visitors about various sustainable farming practices and methods, using the 1.5ha “educational trail”. Participants had the chance to learn about water retention, the agricultural utilisation of collected rainwater and treated wastewater, biodiversity, etc.
– How can agri-businesses get funding for their sustainability efforts?
– They can get money for such projects from the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) budget and national co-financing. In the 2023-2027 period each EU member state must spend minimum 40% of these resources on sustainability projects.
– What are your future plans in the field of sustainability?
– NAK will keep working hard for promoting sustainable farming, precision farming and agricultural digitalisation, and we are going to represent the interests of our members on every platform, just like in the past. Our expert network of 600 so-called village farmers is waiting for farmers with advice and practical help all over the country. (x)
