The foreign trade balance of fresh spinach was negative in 2023
In Hungary, spinach is one of the earliest outdoor vegetables. According to KSH data, the spinach harvest was 12.1 thousand tons in 2022, which was 32 percent higher than the average for the years 2017-2021.
According to KSH data, the foreign trade balance of fresh spinach was negative, its import increased by 7 percent to 452 tons in 2023 compared to the previous year, the largest amount came from Spain (229 tons). Exports – primarily to Romania – fell by 32 percent to 153 tons at the same time. The import of frozen spinach increased by 31 percent, amounting to 2.2 thousand tons in 2023. The largest suppliers were the Czech Republic (1 thousand tons), Belgium (774 tons) and Austria (154 tons). At the same time, exports decreased by 3 percent to 1.02 thousand tons, the main target markets being the United Kingdom (275 tons) and Greece (273 tons).
The value of frozen spinach imports increased by 23 percent to HUF 617 million, while the income from exports increased by 11 percent to HUF 343 million in 2023 compared to the previous year.
According to the data of AKI PÁIR, the producer price of spinach at the Budapest Wholesale Market was HUF 943/kilogram 11–17, 2024. per week, decreased by 2 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
