The average yield of wheat increased by 36 percent compared to last year
The harvest of grain cereals was almost completed by August 13, 2023, and the harvest was completed on 1 million 602 thousand hectares of the planned 1 million 619 thousand hectares.
The producers harvested a total of 8.4 million tons of grain, of which 68.4 percent was wheat and 27 percent was barley. The harvested area of winter wheat was 1 million hectares, the yield amount was 5.7 million tons, the average yield increased by 36.5 percent compared to last year, and was 5.8 tons/hectare nationally. A total of 2.3 million tons of autumn and spring barley was harvested from an area 24.9 percent larger than last year, 416.3 thousand hectares, 52.8 percent more.
Cherries, apricots and peaches also produced more
Cherry picking was nearing its end on the day of the report. The national average of the cherry crop was 16.6 percent higher than last year, and amounted to 7 tons per hectare. While in Nógrád county only 0.6 tons of cherries were grown per hectare, farmers in Heves county achieved an average yield of 11.2 tons. The production volume of apricots was around 6.4 thousand tons, it was only one fifth of the total crop in 2022, and the average yield reached 1.3 tons per hectare. Peach picking was at 87.8 percent at the time of the report, the average yield increased by about a third compared to the previous year, and was 7 tons/hectare.
