Profession.hu prepares you for salary negotiations
Negotiation situations with the employer require preparation. It is essential that employees effectively represent their interests and needs, whether it is a salary negotiation or increasing the flexibility of work. How should we prepare and what should we pay attention to during a negotiation? The business manager of Profession Services has collected tips for effective negotiation.
Arrive with a precise idea
When preparing for a negotiation with the employer – depending on its purpose – it is important to first consider what level of salary package, salary increase or non-wage benefits we would be satisfied with, and how much of this we are willing to give up. When applying for a new job, the approach is different: the employee here needs to consider what level of salary and benefits package they would be willing to leave their established workplace for and how flexible they are in these. Of course, priorities may change depending on the situation in life, for example, if the person has lost their job, does not feel comfortable at their original workplace, or wants to continue working in a different way – flexible or part-time. It is important to think about what salary package we need to maintain our standard of living and negotiate with this in mind.
Think about what we offer
Negotiations with the employer can be challenging for many people – nevertheless, it is especially important for every employee to represent their legitimate interests. The success of negotiation situations can be increased if we add the appropriate interpretation. List the arguments in favor of the legitimacy of our salary increase request and provide specific examples that support what has been said: this can be, in addition to the importance of our work, for example, that we do it to the best of our ability, our development, our performance, and our reliability. In addition to all this, thoughtful preparation can also give you confidence in the negotiation situation.
It is recommended to proceed similarly during the salary negotiation phase of the hiring process: after we have discussed our arguments and it is clear to both parties how they can benefit from working together, it is worth moving on to the demands regarding both salary and work schedule, and it is worth preparing for this in advance.
