Mars Wrigley has switched to 100% responsibly sourced cocoa in Europe
Mars Wrigley has reached an important milestone in sourcing cocoa from a responsible source. One of the world’s largest confectionery manufacturers has announced that from 2023, 100% of the cocoa purchased for its factories in Europe will come from controlled, responsible sources. The announcement will affect the production of chocolate products popular in our country as well, such as Snickers®, M&Ms®, Mars®, Maltesers® and Milky Way®.
The transition to 100% responsibly sourced cocoa is a key part of Mars Wrigley’s Cocoa for Generations strategy. The strategy announced in 2018 aims to achieve real, lasting, positive change in the supply chain for future generations. It focuses on the critical issues that are essential for cocoa farming families to thrive and includes measures to protect children, preserve forests and improve farmers’ incomes.- 100% responsibly sourced in our European factories we will use cocoa from Cocoa is one of the key raw materials for our global brands, and it also plays an important role in the livelihood of the approximately 350,000 cocoa farmers in our supply chain. As one of the world’s largest buyers of cocoa, we have a responsibility to help drive positive, long-term, systemic change and the growers and communities in our supply chain. – said Benjamin Guilbert, Vice President of Procurement for Europe, CIS & Turkey at Mars Wrigley. – We know we still have a lot to do, but we are determined to continue working with our partners to create a modern, inclusive and sustainable cocoa supply chain. We work for a supply chain in which the environment is protected, human rights are respected and everyone has the opportunity to prosper. added Inge Jacobs, director of human rights and social impact at Mars Wrigley Global.
This is how the company achieves its objectives
According to Mars Wrigley’s latest report, Cocoa for Generations, released on September 18, the company is on track to meet its global goal of sourcing 100% of its cocoa through its responsible sourcing program by 2025, and every cocoa crop used by Mars can be traced back to the first point of purchase. At the end of 2021, 61% of the company’s cocoa used globally was responsibly sourced, and cocoa used in 44% of global supply was traceable from the first point of purchase.
The announcement was made at the opening of a unique, interactive exhibition in Paris, which presents cocoa from the cultivation of the bean to the latest innovations of the company, and draws attention to the commitments and initiatives of the Mars Cocoa for Generations strategy.
