Facts and myths about the mandatory deposit system
Within a few days of its introduction, many questions arose among consumers about the new deposit fee system, while the return of packaging materials already works effectively in several countries and effectively supports the fulfillment of environmental protection goals. From January 1, 2024, the deposit fee system started, i.e. the mandatory deposit sytem of certain beverage packages is now regulated by legal provisions. In the mandatory return system, also known as the DRS (Deposit Return System), the consumer pays a fixed deposit in addition to the price of the product at the time of purchase, which is fully refunded when the packaging is returned. PET bottles larger than 0.1 liters and smaller than 3 liters, aluminum cans and non-refillable bottles participate in the redemption system. The goal of the system is to reduce the amount of waste, to recycle the collected packaging more effectively, and to create a circular economy in the long term.
