Nagykörűi crispy cherry has received EU geographical indication protection
The European Commission has approved the inclusion of the name Nagykörűi crispy cherry in the EU register of protected designations of origin, the Brussels body announced on Friday.
For the use of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) the Petrovay crisp landscape variety grown within the administrative boundaries of Nagykörű, as well as the state-recognized cherry varieties included in the national variety register, such as the Badacsony giant, Bigarreau Burlat, Carmen, Jaboulay, Hedelfingen giant, Germersdorfi and the fruits of their registered versions intended for fresh consumption and processing are eligible. Today, Nagykörű is Hungary’s largest cherry-growing area of 200 hectares. The geographical area surrounded by the bends of the Tisza has a specific microclimate. Indoor fruit and grape cultivation in the fruit and grape orchards in the area dates back to the middle of the 18th century. Its significant role in the settlement’s economy is shown by the fact that the cherry is also included in the settlement’s coat of arms. Since 1996, the cherry harvest has been celebrated every year in June as part of the Cherry Festival.
After the approval, the name Nagykörűi crispy cherry was added to the eAmbrosia list, which currently contains 1,590 EU agricultural products and foodstuffs, they added.
