A study examining retail activities and referred to as the Hoffmann-report has caused a lot of controversy since its publication. Allegedly, parts of the report dealing with agriculture are to be reworded. A panel of experts lead by Mrs. Hoffmann, a professor at Corvinus Universtity was asked by Ferenc Gyurcsány to prepare a report about the current situation in retail trade to help in working out future government measures. The findings of the report are coherent with markets research results and statistical data. According to the report, retailers are in a stronger position than suppliers and changes are needed in consumer protection. Regarding many products, the role played by authorities would be limited, but a flexible and efficient routine of inspections would be introduced to enhance consumer safety. All members of the food supply chain have found points to argue with in the report, though it is said to have been prepared after consultations with the parties concerned.
