Auchan has had its accessibility checked again
The last Sunday of September is World Day of the Deaf. Auchan Hungary employs several hundred employees with disabilities, the largest proportion of whom are deaf, who are mostly encountered at the checkouts. Improving the quality of life of people with disabilities and employing people with disabilities (PWDs) is one of the cornerstones of the company’s HR, sustainability and social responsibility strategy. In addition to its employees, it also wants to provide accessible conditions for its customers, which is why – as the only company in the FMCG sector – it had its stores re-inspected by Access4you, as a result of which it was able to renew its accessibility certificate.
The accessibility audit by Acces4you has been completed at Auchan Hungary. Acces4you is a market-leading social impact company that assesses, certifies and qualifies the accessibility of the built environment in 16 real estate segments for 8+1 disabled groups.
The auditors personally visited and assessed all 24 Auchan stores, the central office building and the Auchan Korzó area based on a data-driven criteria system.
As a result, 21 stores received certified location certification, which proves that they meet the needs of wheelchair users and disabled people, elderly people, people with limited mobility, people using strollers and deaf people. Three Auchan stores – in Csepel, Szeged and Szekszárd – received bronze certification, so that in addition to the above, they are also comfortable for the visually impaired. A detailed site plan of each Auchan store and the accessibility location profile associated with the certificate can be found on the company’s website, based on which those concerned can receive reliable information and plan their visits in advance. Stickers are also displayed at the entrances of the stores to indicate for whom the store is accessible.
Nearly 100,000 purchases are made in Auchan stores every day, which means two to three times as many visitors on average, as customers are usually not alone. By renewing the certificates, the chain also wants to emphasize that accessibility is of paramount importance to it, both for its customers and its employees. It also wants to draw the attention of retail players to its importance, as 16% of society lives with some kind of disability, which means that it affects one in six people. The situation is complicated by the fact that 80% of disabilities are invisible, and almost all of us experience them at some stage in our lives due to some kind of illness, accident or aging.
