New ways: dm is moving part of its logistics processes to the railway
Dm is continuing with the decarbonisation of its logistics network. This year the company will introduce intermodal transport into its supply chain. Products will make the majority of the journey by rail, while preliminary and follow-up transport will be done by trucks – from the production plants to the terminal and from the terminal to the distribution centres.
From July 2024 14 suppliers of the Enns (Austria) distribution centre and 13 suppliers of the dm private label distribution centre in Páty (Hungary) will be converted to intermodal transport. If the Enns distribution centre, dm’s private label distribution centre in Hungary, and all potential suppliers to other distribution centres in dm countries switch to this form of intermodal transport by 2026, annual CO2 savings of up to 700 tonnes can be achieved.
Depending on the distance and the load, intermodal transport could lead to 60-80% CO2 savings compared to road transport. By the end of 2024 11 partner countries will be exploring the possibility of introducing intermodal transport.
