Coop’s edible oil collection service continues to be successful
So far, customers have handed in more than 600,000 liters of used cooking oil at the trade group, who also receive a HUF 100 coupon for every liter handed in.
In addition to supporting communities, the purely Hungarian-owned Coop Economic Group is committed to the world’s global environmental problems. A responsible company can no longer exist without a sustainability strategy, therefore environmentally and energy-conscious thinking is one of the defining pillars of the chain’s responsible activities, during which it pays particular attention to the reduction of the environmental effects, emissions, and ecological footprint of its operations, as well as the optimization of energy use. The latter is not only an environmental issue, but also a matter of competitiveness, as Coop has the most extensive coverage and the largest number of stores among the food retail players operating in Hungary, with more than 2,200 stores in around 1,450 settlements.
There is a coupon for protecting the environment
In the spirit of environmental awareness, as the first and unique initiative of the country’s food retail players, Coop started the collection of used cooking oil in its stores in 2017, which is now a basic service in supermarket-category units, but is available in a total of 540 stores (the list of oil points is available on the Coop website away). The service is popular among customers, which is clearly shown by the fact that almost 600,000 liters have been collected so far, as well as the fact that this year the trade group expects another 150,000 liters. The store chain also encourages its customers to be environmentally conscious, as it gives them a coupon for every liter of used cooking oil delivered, which they can redeem for any product. From September of last year, it is even more worthwhile to bring used cooking oil to Coop points, as the value of the coupon issued per liter delivered has increased to HUF 100. Customers can hand in used cooking oil, filtered and in liter packages, at designated stores.
