Eurozone inflation continued to fall
The annual harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) of the Eurozone rose slightly in March, but the situation is no longer so favorable in a monthly comparison. According to data published by Eurostat, the HICP increased by 2.4 percent in March, which represents a slowdown compared to February’s growth. However, this fell short of market expectations, which had forecast a 2.6 percent increase.
Core inflation, which filters out fluctuations in energy and food prices, decreased to 2.9 percent in March, compared to the 3.1 percent increase in February. It was also lower than analysts’ expectations of 3 percent.
In the euro area, however, the accelerating rise in consumer prices can already be felt on a monthly basis. In March, prices exceeded the February level by 0.8 percent, while core inflation increased to 1.1 percent from 0.7 percent in the previous month.
