Our country’s agricultural relations with Kenya continue to strengthen
Africa can be the world’s largest global food producer, and our country must take advantage of its potential, said István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture, who met with Mithika Linturi, Kenya’s Minister of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, in Nairobi on Thursday.
The minister stated at the meeting that our country is committed to further deepening the bilateral agricultural relations between Hungary and Kenya. An important step in this process could be the strengthening of bilateral trade cooperation and the exploitation of the potential in plant cultivation. István Nagy added that the population is constantly growing in Kenya, but unfortunately the quality of the farmland is losing, and food security is therefore becoming more valuable. The head of the department considers it an important step forward that a model farm will be established in the region with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, which can further help food security. The project also offers additional opportunities in the field of seed breeding and production.
In the framework of the meeting, the minister drew the attention of his Kenyan colleague to the expansion of scientific and educational cooperation
With the exchange of scientific knowledge, instructors and students, agriculture can further develop. Through our country’s role in the FAO, we have the opportunity to transfer Hungarian agricultural knowledge to Kenyan university students within the framework of a scholarship program. African students are very active, as we have already supported the studies of two dozen young Kenyans in Hungary, the minister added.
