More exercise, better well-being – Mastercard calls for green work
Mastercard is once again launching its GoGreener campaign this year, which encourages employees to commute to work more sustainably. The initiative encourages employees to switch to cycling, public transport, walking or other environmentally friendly forms of transport, even for just a few days a week. This year’s challenge is even broader: in addition to the banking sector, media players, agencies and e-retailers have also joined in to collect “green kilometers”.
“Even if someone puts down their car for a day or two a week, it makes a big difference. GoGreener is not only about sustainability, but also about everyday movement, about a more flexible, enjoyable and cost-effective way to work. Last year, we collected more than 240 thousand green kilometers, which is equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide absorption of several thousand trees – this year, together with more partners, we want to surpass this”
– said Gergely Márkus, Mastercard’s country manager for Hungary and Slovenia.
According to a recent national survey commissioned by Mastercard, the majority of urban workers do not stick to one mode of transport: on average, people combine two or three modes on weekdays. Although the car and public transport remain the most common choices – roughly two-thirds of workers use both – every third respondent rides a bicycle at least occasionally. Micromobility solutions – such as scooters or walking – are mainly popular for shorter distances, under 10 kilometers, while for longer trips, over 20 kilometers, the majority prefer to use cars or public transport.
Transport habits differ by region: in Budapest, public transport is the dominant mode, while in large rural cities, cars are the most popular, and there are many more people cycling (40%, compared to 17% in the capital). Walking is the way to go for short distances, public transport is ideal for medium distances, while cars are preferred for longer trips.
