The UN FAO urges more cooperation in the banana sector
The participants of the Fourth Banana World Forum will discuss the main challenges, such as climate change, the costs of fertilizers and transportation, and the TR4 disease.
The fourth global World Banana Forum started today, hosted by the Rome headquarters of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The topics of the conference include the many challenges faced by banana producers, including the effects of climate change, high energy and fertilizer prices, and the so-called fusarium fungus. the worrying spread of tropical race 4 (TR4).
At the opening of the event, FAO Director-General Tzu Tung-ju referred to many aspects of the banana’s importance: “Bananas are one of the most important fruits in terms of global trade and consumption – the more than 1,000 varieties produced worldwide provide essential nutrients for many.”
Csü noted that the banana sector is extremely important for some less developed and low-income countries, where it is not only a basic food, but also contributes to job creation and livelihood. The Director-General of the FAO expressed his hope that the conference will also boost the situation of small farmers, which remains a priority.
