Tesco rolls out fresh produce campaign
Supermarket chain Tesco is doubling down on its commitment to encouraging better nutrition by launching an initiative to help families access more fruit and vegetables easily.
The new plan comes as government research revealed that less than 1 in 10 children, and 1 in 5 adults eat the recommended five pieces of fruit and vegetables per day.
Tesco shoppers will be able to earn personalised Clubcard stamps on fresh fruit and vegetable purchases, which can be turned into Clubcard points and vouchers.
Additionally, the retailer will be giving out extra Clubcard points for fruit and vegetable purchases, as well as offering bonus points on fresh produce sales throughout the summer.
As part of the initiative, Tesco giant is also handing out free fruit to children at checkouts from 4 to 17 August. The retailer estimates it will give away more than 3.5 million apples in over two weeks.
Ashwin Prasad, chief executive of Tesco, said: “We understand that for many, there are barriers that make healthy eating feel hard. We want to help our customers make small changes that amount to big health benefits for themselves and their families.
“That’s why we’re setting out to make healthy choices easier every day, starting with new offers and support for families in stores this summer.”
The new campaign is rolling out after the Government’s proposed plans for tighter health regulations on supermarkets were announced over the summer. Tesco was one of the retailers that strongly supported the Government’s new policies aimed at reducing obesity in the UK.
Wes Streeting, Health and Social Care Secretary, said: “Obesity has doubled since the 1990s and costs our NHS £11 billion a year. Our brilliant supermarkets already do so much work for our communities and are trying to make their stores healthier, and we want to work with them and other businesses to create a level playing field.”
“I’m grateful to Tesco for picking up the mantle and helping tackle this crisis by making it easier and more affordable for families and kids to eat fresh fruit and veg,” he added.
