Crop security can only be achieved with suitable seeds
In view of the planting season, the authority checked seed samples in the past period. About the action dr. Márton Nobilis, the Secretary of State responsible for food industry and trade policy at the Ministry of Agriculture, said that experts from the relevant county government offices took samples from a total of 78 small bags of vegetable seeds to test purity and germination.
The experts obtained the samples from various supermarket chains, farm shops and outsourcers from all over the country. The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office examined about 20 products from four species (sweet corn, radishes, lettuce and cucumber).
Based on the results of the tests, the purity of the seeds in small bags proved to be adequate in all cases
In terms of germination capacity, 93.6% of the samples met the requirements stipulated in the standards. Only 5 items did not meet the requirements. Regarding these items, the authority took the necessary measures in order to protect the customers – explained Dr. Márton Nobilis. As the first step to achieving a good harvest, when buying small bags of seeds, it is always advisable to check the expiration date and the identification number on the packaging. In addition, it is worth considering the cultivation technology recommended by the distributor (usually) indicated on the bags. In the case of hybrid seeds, it is not recommended to collect seeds and re-sow, but to buy new lots every year, in order to ensure adequate crop security – Dr. Márton Nobilis.
