The domestic melon takes everything
Melon harvesting began in the first half of July, and the fruit is of excellent quality this year as well. And by consuming domestic products, we support the livelihood of Hungarian families and the Hungarian economy – declared Minister of Agriculture István Nagy.
The head of the ministry reminded that, according to preliminary estimates, we can expect a harvest of approximately 125,000 tons of watermelons and almost 10,000 tons of cantaloupes this year. He added that this year 1,087 producers grow watermelons on 2,821 hectares, which is 14% more than last year. Regarding watermelon, 252 people grow 451 hectares, which means 29% more cultivation area than last year.
István Nagy emphasized that this year the crop was not affected by frost, so its quality is excellent
And its quantity is sufficient to ensure the supply of the supermarket chains, which means that we can buy Hungarian melons in stores this year as well and there is no need to worry about a shortage of goods. If we want to be conscious customers, we should eat and buy domestic seasonal fruit, because it is a controlled and safe product from the farm to the table. By choosing domestic products, we support not only the livelihood of Hungarian farmers and families, but also the entire national economy, added the minister. T
he minister also touched on the fact that, due to climate change, we can enjoy Hungarian melons until September, because the Lőrinc day season closure is already a thing of the past
Melon is not only delicious, but also healthy. It has an excellent nutritional value, is low in calories and fat, and is full of vitamins and minerals. Yellow and watermelon contain, among other things, vitamins A, C, B6 and E, as well as iron and phosphorus. And its water content provides excellent hydration, which is especially beneficial for our body in the heat. Its antioxidant content contributes to heart health, explained the minister.
