A change of perspective is needed to improve the condition of our soils
Healthy soil serves both food security and climate protection, sustainable and long-term, competitive farming – said Anikó Juhász, Deputy State Secretary for Agricultural Economy of the Ministry of Agriculture, at the opening of the 8th TMG REAG Soil Life Conference and Exhibition in Jakabszállás on Thursday.

The Deputy State Secretary emphasized that soil is the common denominator of our sustainability and is important for farmers, science and public administration. If we improve the condition of our soils, we can remedy many of our problems at once, and the approach of regenerative farming can help us produce food on healthy soils. Anikó Juhász highlighted that the Agro-ecological Program supports, among others, no-tillage cultivation, the use of cover crops, the preservation of grasslands, and erosion reduction in various ways. These measures also promote the wider application of regenerative farming, contributing to the development of sustainable and competitive agricultural systems, she added. Through the new Agri-environmental Management Program, we will encourage the transition to soil regenerative farming on arable land from 2025 with support, in the case of strip cultivation and no-tillage. The organizer of the event, the Soil Regenerative Farmers Association, which is also part of the renewal of the support system, provides great help in this work, she underlined. She added that soil degradation and increasing droughts cause enormous damage worldwide, which, according to some estimates, already exceeds 300 billion dollars annually. This process is causing serious damage to global food security and water supply. Our country ranks 6th among the European Union member states and 20th in the world in terms of the proportion of agricultural land per capita – the Deputy Secretary of State presented the data.
The Ministry of Agriculture encourages water conservation interventions and investments, and the application of soil protection technologies through knowledge transfer and model projects, for which, at the same time, farmers’ cooperation and collaboration are essential.
