McDonald’s in Hungary will remove disposable plastic straws, cutlery and plastic lids for beverage glasses from all its units on Friday in order to remove plastics, which will be replaced by paper straws, wooden cutlery and fiber-based cup lids, the restaurant chain told MTI.

The switch will result in the disappearance of 46 million plastic straws, more than 11 million plastic spoons and 2 million plastic forks and knives per year.

As a result of the switch, 99 percent of the packaging used for products made in restaurants will come from renewable, recycled, or third-party-certified, sustainable sources. The restaurant chain spends 800 million forints a year on the changeover. (MTI)
