Serious decline in Hungarian green pea production
In recent years, Hungary was the third largest producer of green peas in the European Union, and also occupied a prominent place in the export market. This year, however, brought a serious decline in the industrial sector, according to today’s article from the Agricultural Sector. The growing area of green peas showed an almost continuous downward trend in recent years, although a slight increase was observed in 2022: the growing area increased from 11-12 thousand hectares to 12-13 thousand hectares by 2023. This year, on the other hand, there was a dramatic decline, the production areas decreased by approximately 30-40 percent.
Unfavorable weather and decreasing crop area
The weather was not favorable for production either. The harvests started 2-3 weeks earlier than usual, and the amount of this year’s green pea crop is significantly lower than the expected, estimated amounts. József Losó, chairman of the board of Mirelite Mirsa Zrt., said that the area sown for green peas varies greatly from year to year, depending on the producer’s desire and industrial needs. This year, there were significantly fewer green peas produced across the country compared to the data of the past years.
Natural disasters hit the crop
The main problem was caused by the significant amount of precipitation that fell during the harvest period, but the hail also caused enormous damage to the crop. These natural calamities further aggravated the already unfavorable situation, so the producers suffered significant losses.
Future prospects
The current situation poses serious challenges to Hungarian green pea producers. The impact of the decline will not only affect the domestic market, but will also be felt in the export markets. It will be essential for producers and industry players to thoroughly analyze the situation and take appropriate measures to stabilize production in the future and ensure that market demands are met.
