Green pea foreign trade balance is positive
According to KSH data, the green pea harvest in Hungary in 2024 was 38 percent smaller (57 thousand tons) on a 25 percent smaller area than in 2023. According to the publication of the Institute of Agricultural Economics, the sown area of green pea in 2025 will be 12.8 thousand hectares. According to experts, the cool spring and aphid infestation may have hindered the development of green pea this year, and the season started later.

According to KSH data, the foreign trade balance of fresh and processed (frozen and canned) green peas in Hungary is positive. The export of canned green peas increased by 12 percent (45.5 thousand tons) in 2024 compared to a year earlier. Russia was the most significant buyer market, while canned green peas were also shipped to Germany, Romania and Lithuania.
In the first four months of this year, the volume of canned green peas sold on export markets decreased by 18 percent to 10.9 thousand tons compared to the same period of the previous year
The largest buyer markets were Germany (1.57 thousand tons), Romania (1.43 thousand tons) and Italy (1.24 thousand tons). Exports of frozen green peas increased by 16 percent to 11.8 thousand tons last year The largest buyers were Germany and Greece. In the first four months of this year, exports of frozen green peas decreased by 8 percent to 3.73 thousand tons, while imports increased by 78 percent to 1.34 thousand tons compared to the same period of 2024. Frozen green peas arrived on the Hungarian market primarily from Poland. According to AKI PÁIR data, green peas appeared on the Budapest Wholesale Market later this year, in the 19th week, at a price of 3,000 forints/kilogram, which decreased to 1,800 forints/kilogram by the 22nd week.
