Strategic partnership for environmentally conscious aviation
OTP Travel and Lufthansa Airlines have signed an agreement on the purchase of sustainable fuel. The domestic market-leading travel service provider joined the sustainability program launched by Europe’s second largest airline group, and on this occasion purchased HUF 1 million worth of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF – Sustainable Aviation Fuel). This contributes to the reduction of Lufthansa’s carbon dioxide emissions and reinforces its commitment to environmentally conscious travel.
As strategic partners, the Lufthansa airline and OTP Travel also work together for sustainable, environmentally conscious operations. OTP Travel participates in the sustainable fuel (SAF) program of the Lufthansa Group. The HUF 1 million SAF reduces the carbon footprint of 38 passengers traveling in economy class on the Frankfurt-Budapest route to zero for the journey. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is an umbrella term for all aviation fuels that are made from non-fossil materials. There are different processes for the production of SAF – using both biogenic and non-biogenic raw materials. Currently available SAF is made from biogenic residues and reduces the carbon footprint by approximately 80% compared to conventional kerosene.
The Lufthansa Group is committed to researching and testing SAF technologies, such as Power-to-Liquid (PtL) based on electrolysis or Sun-to-Liquid (StL) technology using solar energy. OTP Travel’s long-term commitment to sustainable travel is also reflected in its daily operations.
They work with hotels and service providers that use environmentally friendly practices, such as the use of energy-saving technologies, waste reduction programs and local, organic food offerings, or, in the case of airlines, the use of recycled fuel. In 2023, OTP Travel obtained the international Travelife Partner certification – as the first and only travel agency based in Hungary, which required compliance with more than a hundred strict criteria. Its passengers can participate in more and more programs that focus on protecting the natural environment, respecting local traditions, and supporting local communities.
