In 2019 there were 26,000 active hospitality businesses, from which 12,000 were sole traders and 14,000 were companies. On 30 June 2020 the number of bars and restaurants was 50,832 – only 627 fewer than a year before. This indicates that the majority of places survived the first wave of the pandemic.
