Expensive tomato
As of 1 January 2019 the VAT on UHT and ESL milk reduced from 18 to 5 percent. Data from the first 32 weeks of the year indicate that the processing sales price of 2.8 percent fat milk grew by 3 percent, and domestic sales jumped 16 percent in this period, in comparison with the first 32 weeks of 2018. The processing sales price of 1.5 percent fat milk augmented by 6 percent and domestic sales increased by 4 percent in the same period.
At the Budapest Wholesale Market the price of tomato was HUF 490/kg on week No.32 – nearly twice as much as a year earlier. Experts say tomato’s price started to elevate in mid-July due to the changeable weather that resulted in lower yields. The price of tomato didn’t only increase in Hungary but in the European Union too. According to data from the European Commission, the average price of tomato was EUR 79/100kg in July, which was 23 percent higher than one year before. The price was up 40-65 percent in France, the Netherlands and Spain, but it dropped 14 percent in Italy. . //
