Walmart matches Amazon, tests self-service grocery order pickup kiosk
Walmart has introduced an automated grocery pickup kiosk at an Oklahoma City store, matching a concept Amazon Fresh introduced two years ago. Customers order groceries online or use an app and pick up the order at a 24-hour kiosk, according to a Verge report.
The kiosk, which doesn’t yet bear a particular name, sends a customer’s order to a local store for employees to package the items in bags for pickup. The customer, upon arriving at the store, enters a five-digit pickup code and the machine retrieves the grocery bags. The service is free, but a minimum purchase of $30 is required.
The kiosk is 20 by 80 feet and is being tested for feedback. Walmart said it has been working on such a concept since 2014.
