You can apply for EU compensation for grain imports from Ukraine from October
From October 1, farmers can apply for EU compensation for grain imports from Ukraine, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy announced. He added that the ministry determined the terms of use of the symbolic amount of EUR 15.9 million in compensation awarded for the treatment of market difficulties, taking into account the targeted use.
The minister explained that those farmers who, based on their uniform area-based support application, had a maximum of 500 hectares of approved agricultural land in 2022, and within that, received support for a maximum of 100 hectares of corn-growing land, are entitled to compensation. The grant application can be submitted to the Hungarian State Treasury between October 1, 2023 and October 15, 2023, according to the guidelines published on the MÁK website. The compensation will be paid by the end of this year, he added. He explained that the affected farmers must prove that they sold at least 10 tons of corn in the period from May 15, 2023 to September 15, 2023. The compensation per hectare was defined as the quotient of the 15.9 million euro frame amount and the corn production area approved for all applicants who fulfilled the conditions, explained István Nagy.
Ukrainian grain is causing problems for several countries
The head of the ministry emphasized that the large amount of incoming Ukrainian goods caused serious losses to farmers in the member states neighboring Ukraine due to sales difficulties, pressure on market prices and increased storage costs. Following the joint action of the affected member states – Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia – the European Commission decided on a partial, symbolic compensation. The European Commission distributed a total of 100 million euros among the affected member states in proportion to their agricultural areas, the minister underlined.
