Not only 2024 but unfortunately 2025 will also be influenced by the rising cost of chocolate ingredients.

Consumers are feeling this with their wallets and are making changes: they are looking for smaller products, substitutes or they pay more attention to promotions.

Panna Miklós, confectionery business manager of Nestlé:

“This trend is particularly true for seasonal chocolates, which have a high price per kilogram compared to other sweets. As a result, after dynamic double-digit growth in the past, the category of seasonal chocolate figures is stagnating”.

Pál Molnár, commercial director of Szerencsi Bonbon Kft:

“The prices of almost all raw materials keep rising: milk derivatives, cocoa butter, cocoa paste, etc. Only the price of sugar is reducing, but sweetener prices continue to climb”.

Kitti Lázár, BOCI marketing manager of Cerbona Food Production Zrt.:

“At Easter 2025 demand is expected to remain at the level of last year, with the difference that consumers will prefer smaller, affordable but high-quality products”.

Same but smaller

It is important to emphasise that economising doesn’t necessarily mean compromising on quality. The position of branded products is solid exactly because of their guaranteed quality. At the same time consumers are switching to smaller formats or to other chocolate subcategories that offer better value for money.

Instead of the classic 80-100g products of the past, they are now opting for 50g or smaller chocolates, explains Panna Miklós. Despite the above trends Nestlé’s 85g SMARTIES and KITKAT bunnies remained the best-sellers from the Easter portfolio last year. The company has a number of surprises in store for Easter 2025: a SMARTIES plush toy gift box will be available in a smaller size and the company is also preparing a multipack.

Inflation is expected to force manufacturers to focus on price-sensitive segments, while premium products remain a promising segment of the market

The iconic BALATON brand will be offering an Easter bunny for the first time this year, in 45g size, at an affordable price. Cerbona – the company is now the distributor of the BOCI brand – has learned it from the 2024 Easter season that the brand’s buyers still prefer traditional, well-known products such as chocolate bunnies and eggs. Shoppers appreciate aesthetic packaging more and more. In the 2024 Easter season the most successful BOCI chocolates were the classic milk chocolate figures, especially the chocolate bunnies and eggs, informs Kitti Lázár.

Healthier chocolate figures

Pál Molnár’s observation is that the Easter season is becoming shorter. Fewer and fewer families are keeping the traditions. In 2024 fewer packs and figures were sold in shops, and the proportion of dark chocolate continued to diminish. On the positive side, however, there was an increase in sales of medium-sized figures. Many manufacturers are now only present in the market with milk chocolate (made either with sugar or with sweeteners as a health-conscious product). Szerencsi Bonbon still offers products made from high quality 70% Hungarian dark chocolate and there is great demand for these in many regions of Hungary. The stars of last year were egg dragée and half-egg dragée, alongside 20g eggs and 50g rabbits, and the special 20g milk chocolate product Okostojás, which contains Omega3. Completing the ZERO product range made with sweeteners, ZERO milk chocolate rabbit and eggs hit the shops. //

Kandiz surprise eggs stand out not only with the sweets and toys inside, but also with their appearance and sustainable design. Mega Surprise Egg is a 160g giant egg decorated with popular fairytale characters such as Paw Patrol, Miraculous and Sponge Bob. The smaller Super Crystal Egg holds lollipops, stickers and puzzles, also decorated with favourite fairytale characters. Chiko Eggs are 20g with cereal balls, white chocolate and hazelnut cream. The surprise eggs are available all year round! www.salesrep.hu

Demand for quality remains, in spite of the rising prices

“Because of growing raw material prices in 2024, the price of sweets increased, entailing a drop in volume sales. However, consumers remained willing to pay higher prices for quality and special products, even more so in the festive periods such as Easter and Christmas. We are convinced that in 2025 these festive weeks will remain to be the busiest periods in the confectionery market”, the Association of Hungarian Confectionery Manufacturers says in a statement sent to our magazine.

The association’s view is that the current economic situation and inflation will make getting value for money even more important for shoppers, so private labels are likely to strengthen. Further price rises can be expected because of the volatile raw material prices, but manufacturers are seeking to minimise costs by launching products in smaller sizes or making them using alternative ingredients. At Easter chocolates rabbits and eggs are going to dominate, but there will be growing demand for artisan and other special chocolates too. New, exotic or seasonal flavours such as orange, ginger or raspberry dark chocolate are expected to appear. Product formats may also change, going in the smaller, “bite-size” direction that meets the needs of more price-sensitive consumers. //

At Easter, figurative chocolates (rabbits, eggs, etc.) will continue to dominate, but there is growing demand for handcrafted and customised chocolates
