Plant-based drinks in the school milk programme
A petition by ProVeg International already had nearly 70,000 signatures in August, urging decision-makers to include plant-based milk alternatives in the European school milk programme. ProVeg vice president Jasmijn de Boo explained that plant-based drinks with added calcium represent a sustainable and healthy choice. They are also in accordance with the EU’s Farm to Fork strategy. Globally 68% of consumers are lactose-sensitive, so plant-based milk substitutes would provide them with nutritious milk-like drinks. Plus the carbon footprint of these products is 63-78% smaller than milk’s.
