Sales of Fairtrade products increased in Germany
Sales of Fairtrade products in Germany increased by 3% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to Fairtrade Deutschland Association. Banana, flowers and coffee increased to the largest extent. 60% of all Fairtrade products also bear organic certification.
Sales of bananas increased by 9%, flowers by 7% and coffee by 5%. According to Benjamin Drösel, marketing and sales director of the non-profit association, this increase is due to the growing interest of consumers in sustainability. The association expects a slight increase in sales for 2024.
Claudia Brück, Director of Communications and Policy at Fairtrade Deutschland, stressed that this positive trend is particularly important for producers in the southern hemisphere, who are currently struggling with increased costs and the effects of the climate crisis. Fairtrade supports producers with advice, training and financial resources to adapt to climate change.
New EU regulations, such as anti-deforestation rules and organic certification requirements, pose additional challenges for producers.
