Hungarian fishery management is on a growing path
There is a high demand for quality Hungarian fish abroad, but domestic fish consumption is far behind the EU average. Live fish and fish meat are at the favorable 5 percent VAT range, since January, leading to the whitening of the black economy and the increase in consumption.
The National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the Hungarian Aquaculture and Fisheries Intermediate Body (MA-HAL) signed a strategic cooperation agreement on 24 May 2018 in Akasztó.
“Hungarian fish is very popular abroad, but improvements in the competitiveness of the sector are needed. Indeed, we need to stimulate domestic consumption as the annual fish consumption is 6-7 kilogrammes / person in Hungary and it is far below the EU average of 20 to 25 kilograms” – Balázs Győrffy, president of NAK said at the signing of the agreement.
