NGM: tourism continues to boom – more than 1.7 million tourists arrived at domestic accommodations in May
The government is constantly working to attract more and more foreign guests to our country, and to allow Hungarian families to spend more and more on travel and recreation. In order to strengthen the sector, the government is taking measures that will give further impetus to tourism, such as strengthening spas – the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) wrote in the introduction to its commentary on the latest tourism data.
Hungary remains a popular destination among domestic and international travelers, with more than 1.7 million guests arriving at accommodations in May, 3.5 percent more than in May last year. The number of registered guest nights was almost 3.9 million at domestic accommodations, which was almost 2 percent more than a year ago. The unfavorable weather did not dampen the spirits of travelers either, with about 2 percent more domestic tourists and 5 percent more international travelers interested in our country than at this time a year ago – the ministry quoted KSH data.
As highlighted, the government’s goal is to further strengthen the momentum and competitiveness of tourism, which accounts for 13 percent of GDP, in the long term, as tourism is a sector of strategic importance to the Hungarian economy.
According to data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) and the National Tourism Data Service Center (NTAK), more than 1.7 million guests arrived in Hungary in May 2025, their number was almost 3.5 percent higher than in May last year – the NGM reiterated. Citing KSH data, they added: the number of foreign guests was 851 thousand, which represents a 5.1 percent increase compared to the same period last year. In the last month of spring, the number of domestic guests was also 851 thousand, which was 1.9 percent more than in May last year.
