Food offering is attracting more and more shoppers to drugstores in Germany
Buying groceries in drugstores continues to gain importance. According to a recent study by market research company Mafowerk, 42 per cent of customers visit drugstores mainly because of the food on offer.
According to Mafowerk, younger customers up to the age of 39 in particular come to drugstores specifically because of the food. The remaining 58 per cent of customers buy food as a secondary purchase to classic drugstore items. It is no longer just small, specialised manufacturers and start-ups from the organic sector that are interested in this sales channel, as the press release reveals.
The study also shows a high purchasing frequency: every second drugstore customer buys groceries in the stores one to three times a month. 28 per cent of those surveyed buy groceries once a week, 9 per cent even several times a week. According to their own statements, customers particularly appreciate the better quality at favourable prices. Consumers are also attracted by exclusive products that are only available in drugstores and the large selection of organic products.
Tea leads the sales rankings
According to the results of the study, tea is the most popular food category in drugstores. 64 per cent of respondents have already bought tea in a drugstore at least once. Muesli bars and confectionery follow in second place. The range is growing continuously, according to Mafowerk.
The trend is upwards: 82 per cent of respondents buy the same amount or more food in drugstores compared to the previous year.
