Netto Marken-Discount To Switch To Unpackaged Cucumbers
German discounter Netto Marken-Discount has announced that it is to only sell unpackaged cucumbers from mid-September onwards.
As a result, all conventional and organic cucumbers will be sold packaging-free in 4,260 Netto outlets across Germany.
The move will help to bring down the use of plastics by 80 tonnes on an annual basis, the retailer said.
The decision to switch to unpackaged cucumbers comes three months after it announced plans to implement laser labelling on the item.
The retail giant is also in the process of replacing 2.2 million plastic trays per year with environmentally friendly carton trays for its organic vine tomatoes.
