Difficult years in the Hungarian food industry: Éder Tamás on the downturn
In the past three years, the performance of the Hungarian food industry has been extremely volatile, which was reinforced by market challenges and the changing regulatory environment. At the CIB Agricultural Conference, Tamás Éder, president of the Association of Responsible Food Producers, analyzed the sector’s situation in detail, stressing that the food industry suffered an unprecedented 12.1% decline in 2023, which even the increase in exports could not compensate for, reports the Agricultural Sector.
The costs of agricultural raw materials rose significantly in 2021, which, however, was only belatedly followed by consumer prices. State interventions, such as the maintenance of price caps and mandatory promotions, further complicated the situation. In addition, the investigations of the Economic Competition Authority and the price-rolling systems had a significant impact on the sector, while the retail sector also put manufacturers under increasing pressure.
Consumer trends and economic pressures
Tamás Éder highlighted that although domestic sales showed growth in the first half of 2024, solvent demand is still weak. In the sector, the pressure of discounting and imported products became more and more pronounced. The lack of skilled and unskilled labor and the high level of state burdens also contribute to the fact that Hungarian food prices have only recently reached the EU average.
