Nébih: Hungarians throw away less food than the EU average
According to the latest Eurostat report, Hungarians throw away less food than the EU average – the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) announced on Friday.
In one year, almost 57 million tons, or 127 kilograms of food per person, end up as waste. 55 percent of this can be attributed to households: an average EU citizen throws away 70 kilograms of food per year. With an annual amount of food waste per capita of 66 kilograms typical of Hungarian households, our country ranks among the least wasteful countries compared to the average.
It is recalled: starting this year, EU member states must provide data on the amount of food waste generated in their country. The data set for 2020 that has just been published is extremely important, as it is the benchmark for the global objective of halving the amount of food waste generated in households and commerce by 2030.
