Márton Nagy: there is a high chance that the margin reduction will be maintained
There is a high chance that the margin reduction measure will not be implemented after May 31, and it is expected that it will also be extended to household goods, the Minister of National Economy said at a press conference in Budapest on Monday.
Márton Nagy explained that the measure can be implemented risk-free if food inflation falls below 5 percent permanently. If the government decides to extend it, it is expected to last until the end of the summer, he said.
In the case of food, 10 more product categories have emerged, the inclusion of which is being examined in the affected circle, but for now they will wait to see how inflation develops in May and June, he added.
The minister said that next week the government will discuss the extension of the margin reduction to household goods, toiletries, and childcare products. In this round, 25-30 product categories are being examined, which could mean several thousand different items.
Regarding the measure, Márton Nagy said: “It has been raised whether there is a right to maintain it in another form, even permanently,” and added that similar decisions have been introduced permanently in many countries.
