A statistical report
Every year the Guild of Hungarian Restaurateurs (MVI) publishes its statistical report about the hospitality sector, which is based on data provided by the Central Statistical Office (KSH). What you can read here is a brief summary of the 2020 report, which was prepared by Károly Berényi, a member of MVI’s body of representatives.
Last year there were approximately 177,000 people working in the commercial accommodation and hospitality sectors. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of employees in the sector dropped 8.5 percent in 2020. There were 50,000 hospitality units waiting for guests all over Hungary, 1,100 fewer than in 2019. Their sales revenue represented a value of 1,062 billion, which was 27 percent less than in the previous year.

Sales declined by over 27 per cent
By the 1st quarter of 2021 the number of workers in the hospitality sector decreased to less than 142,000. Those working full time earned gross HUF 233,000 per month at the end of 2020. This sum was 6.3 percent bigger than in 2019. However, people working in the sector hardly earned 60 percent of the national average.
To compensate for the negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic, between 14 November 2020 and 31 July 2021 the VAT on takeaway and home-delivered food was lowered to 5 percent in Hungary. Plus hospitality units and places of accommodation don’t have to pay the tourism development contribution until 31 December 2021. //
