Labor problems in Germany
The lack of skilled labor is also causing serious problems in Germany. According to research by the Institut für Mittelstandsforschung (SME Research Institute) in Bonn, almost every second (44%) of the approximately 1,100 companies surveyed named the lack of skilled workers as the main challenge.
According to the data, companies that have been on the market for less than ten years and have a very good order backlog are particularly affected – we learned in the VIMOSZ newsletter. Respondents object to the applicants’ inadequate qualifications and are therefore concerned that they will have difficulty managing the generational change in the company. The study cites “increasing competitive pressures” as the second biggest challenge for companies, including higher energy costs, which ranks third among the biggest challenges. Entrepreneurs find themselves faced with the task of meeting rising labor, material and energy costs. Almost 1/3 of the managers even expressed the fear that their own company will no longer be able to operate competitively.
The German hospitality industry association Dehoga is also sounding the alarm – there are 65,000 employees missing in the hospitality industry. According to Dehoga, more than 65,000 workers are currently missing from German hotels and restaurants. Many restaurants are reducing their offerings recently due to a lack of skilled workers, and there are more and more blackouts due to a lack of employees. According to Dehoga’s monthly surveys, labor shortage is regularly one of the biggest challenges for businesses. Germany’s federal labor office reported 33,160 vacancies in the hospitality industry as of June, but actual demand is believed to be at least double that, as many companies no longer report their vacancies to employment offices or job centers.
