MTÜ: Outstanding foreign guest traffic in the first four months of the year
In the first four months of the year, Hungarian accommodation providers submitted data on nearly 9 million guest nights to the National Tourist Information Center. This represents a 3% increase in turnover compared to the same period last year. In addition to the increase in the national average, international guest traffic also gained momentum. In the period from January to April, foreign tourists spent 15% more guest nights in our country, while traffic in the capital city exceeded the 2022 results by 22%. Our country was not only popular among travelers from European countries, more and more people from distant markets also discovered the country.
The first four months of the year started positively in the tourism sector, according to the data of the National Tourist Information Center (NTAK). In January, the turnover at accommodation was 20% higher than a year earlier, and in February there was also a 3% increase. After a small decline in March, the number of guest nights was again above last year’s values in April.
By the end of April, foreign tourists spent a total of 4.6 million guest nights in Hungarian accommodations. 38% more people from the United Kingdom and almost a quarter more people from Germany than at this time last year visited Hungary. Most people came to us from Berlin, and we were able to welcome many guests from Munich and Hamburg as well. The increase in the number of German and British travelers is also important because they spent the most during their stay here. We received twice as many tourists from Italy, and those from Romania spent 20% more nights with us in the first third of the year than a year earlier.
Based on NTAK’s data, an even greater recovery was experienced from the more distant markets outside of Europe. Among these, the intensive increase in the number of Chinese tourists stands out. A significant role in this was played by the fact that in April the first group 8-night trips from China, now targeted only to Hungary, could start. Thus, the Chinese guest traffic increased almost three times compared to April 2022.
