What would happen if TikTok was banned in Hungary?
The TikTok ban in the United States is a warning sign for Hungarian small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), especially in light of the fact that the video-based social media platform was among the ten most popular marketing tools in 2024. A possible ban could have serious consequences, as many Hungarian small businesses have put everything on this one page.
According to the latest research by Marketing Commando, TikTok’s popularity has grown significantly among Hungarian small and medium-sized businesses engaged in marketing activities in the past year, overtaking traditional tools such as blogs, YouTube or webshops.
“TikTok is experiencing the golden age of organic content. There are few content producers compared to the number of users, so a well-made video can achieve enormous reach,”
– points out Gábor Wolf, a small business marketing expert who uses the platform himself. His most-watched educational short video, about the history of brand names, has already had nearly 7 million views.
Many SMEs have recognized the potential of organic reach: restaurants, beauticians, psychologists, construction professionals, retailers and doctors have invested significant time and money in developing their channels. Many businesses have built their entire communication on this platform, so a possible ban could fundamentally shake their operations.
According to the expert, this situation also highlights a more general lesson: relying on a single platform is a dangerous strategy.
“The most dangerous number in business is one, and this cannot be emphasized enough. Relying on a single marketing tool poses a serious risk for any business. Therefore, it is vital that companies do not build their business operations exclusively on a single platform, such as TikTok or Facebook,” advises Gábor Wolf.
