What about insect-based food? Will Hungarian shops also be flooded?
If the production of plant-based foods has been accepted in the EU, Hungary will also have the opportunity to do so. But is this really the near future? The G7 circumvents this issue.
“If the Commission authorizes a new food, it can be marketed in the EU member states, including Hungary, under the conditions specified in the permit, without having to be authorized at the national level as well”
– said the NÉBIH when asked by the G7.
Based on the EU license, insect powder can in principle be used in a wide variety of foods: from crackers, snacks and pizzas to sauces to chocolate and beer. In fact, this is not new, four other insect-based foods have already been marketed in Europe since 2021. At the same time, it is not true that from now on manufacturers could put insect raw materials in any food without being noticed.
NÉBIH also issued a notice about this to reassure those who are worried:
“Nébih has received many inquiries in recent days: is it true that producers will soon be able to add “crickets and beetles” to food without any labeling? The news in this form is absolutely not true!”
they wrote.
