Artificial intelligence in winemaking: new technology is changing the way wine is made
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing American winemaking, enabling remote monitoring of vineyards and optimization of the winemaking process. Although critics argue that this technology takes away the human nature of winemaking, proponents say that AI can be an interesting and useful partner for the wine industry. The BBC mentions one such example in connection with Foley Family Farms, a large American wine company, where AI is widely used in the vineyards.
Foley Family Farms Director of Viticulture, Kara Maraden, is responsible for over 2,000 acres of vineyards within 1,000 miles of California and Oregon. Since he cannot be present everywhere, he checks the water demand of each vineyard remotely from his laptop with the help of artificial intelligence. Her husband explains that using sensors made by Tule Technologies, a California irrigation company, helps grape growers gather accurate data. These sensors measure humidity, temperature, wind speed and other environmental factors placed in the vineyards.
