LIDL Hungary’s second sustainability report has been published
Lidl Hungary assumes responsibility in all areas where it affects people and the environment as a company. In the past two years, the discount chain further strengthened its commitment to sustainability, worked to achieve its goals, and also made new, decisive commitments for a more livable future. It summarized its results in 2020-2021 in its second Sustainability Report.
Climate change requires action in all areas of our lives, which is why the supermarket chain has committed itself to increased climate protection measures. This is shown, among other things, by the fact that from January 1, 2022, it will purchase electricity from 100% renewable energy sources for its entire store network, logistics centers and office building, thereby reducing its CO2 emissions. Lidl implements measures in line with its goals in the area considered to be the most risky from an environmental point of view, i.e. the use of plastic. As a result of continuous optimization, it managed to reduce the use of plastic packaging materials related to its own brand products by 5% from 2020 to 2021.
Sustainability is also a prominent aspect in the design of the discount chain’s offer
Lidl places great emphasis on the sustainable procurement of raw materials exposed to the most significant risks, such as cocoa, coffee, palm oil or tea. In 2021, 50.6% of the discount chain’s fish offering came from certified sustainable sources, which includes permanent and seasonal products of the permanent brand and its own brand. It is an important step forward that last year the company began to expand its selection with carbon-neutral products. Lidl Hungary is also proud of its initiatives supporting Hungarian values and Hungarian suppliers. Within the framework of the “Lidl for Hungarian suppliers” program, the supermarket chain helps its domestic suppliers to appear on export markets. With the company’s support, 726 products from 170 Hungarian suppliers reached 28 Lidl countries in 2021.
As a responsible company, Lidl recognizes the efforts of its employees with competitive wages and special benefits, but also considers helping disadvantaged children and their families to be a matter of its heart.
In 2020-2021, the discount chain provided a total of more than HUF 450 million in support, including in the form of food and non-food donations, through which it contributed to helping disadvantaged Hungarian families, the development of domestic health care, and the care of shelter pets. “In addition to the continuous work carried out to promote sustainability, it is extremely important for us to report on our results transparently. We are proud to publish our second Sustainability Report, which transparently presents how we think about the realization of a more sustainable future on a strategic level and what we do for it every day,” said Judit Tőzsér, head of corporate communications.
