Rozi Horváth, the namesake of the spice brand, has died
The official Facebook page of the Horváth Rozi brand announced with deep sorrow that the brand’s namesake, Rozi Horváth, had passed away. “She poured her heart and soul into the spice blends she created and the recipes that made many family tables special,” the post says. The sad news was first reported by Blikk.
Rozi Horváth was born in Tolmács in 1939, originally named Ilona Drozgyik. After her marriage, she took her husband’s surname, Lajos Horváth, which eventually became the name of the brand. She originally wanted to be a fashion designer, but her plans were thwarted when the chosen textile design major did not start at college. She first pursued her artistic interests as a porcelain painter and technical draftsman.
Her marriage brought a turning point in her life: due to her husband’s work, they moved to Algeria, where she became acquainted with the world of Arabic and French gastronomy. Here she learned the exciting combination of spices and the French language, which opened the door to the world of international flavors. She experimented with various spice pairings with passion and, with the help of a French cookbook, became a true housewife.
Upon returning home, she combined this knowledge with the Hungarian flavor world, and her spice blends soon became known throughout the country. She is credited with several spice blends that are still popular today, which have completed the food poems of generations.
The name Rozi Horváth is synonymous with quality, carefully composed spices. Her legacy remains not only the brand, but also part of Hungarian gastronomy as a whole.
