MBH: store closures drop to pre-Covid level
In the second half of 2024 there was a slowdown in retail store closures: three times fewer shops closed compared to the first half of the year, according to an article by Bence Báthori, sector analyst of MBH Bank’s Analysis Centre.

Based on the latest data for retail stores from the second half of 2024, the 6-month rate of store closures suddenly fell to the level seen in the years before Covid: 1,217 stores closed, representing a 1.3% decline (excluding petrol stations). As regards store type, 52.7% of the shops that closed in 2024 were book, computer and other industrial goods stores, as well as textile, clothing and shoe stores. Since 2005 the total floor space of food and non-food stores has increased by 1.3%, while the number of stores has decreased by 40.5%.
