There is already a shortage of sugar in the shops
You can either not get sugar in Hungarian stores, or the stores limit the amount you can buy, Infostart reports. The expert highlighted the reasons.
Hungary cannot produce enough sugar, and the international situation is not favorable for imports, said the president of the National Association of Sugar Beet Growers, deputy president of the Sugar Product Council and Interprofessional Organization. Explaining the reasons for the insufficient domestic production, Árpád Dorogi said: in recent years, the price of sugar and sugar beet was unfairly low, due to which the producers reduced the sown area every year.
A few years ago, sugar beet was processed domestically on 15,500 hectares, in 2021 on 10,500 hectares, and this year only on 8,600 hectares, Árpád Dorogi said.
The current drought made the situation even worse, so we can’t even expect a good sugar beet harvest this year. There will be few raw materials that the domestic sugar producer can process.
