The Parliament adopted the chips-tax
The Parliament introduced the public health product tax, known as chips-tax. From, September this public health product tax will be applied on high sugar, salt, carbohydrates and caffeine-containing foods and beverages, including the 25 percent less fruit-containing soft drinks, energy drinks and for the pre-packaged cookies, salty snacks, as well as condiments.
The bill of Font Sándor and Kovács József (both Fidesz) was adopted by 255 votes, 54 against and 36 abstentions. The government parties supported, while the representatives of MSZP and LMP opposed the bill, the majority of the representatives of Jobbik abstained.
The tax rate for the affected soft drinks is 5 HUF per liters, for energy drinks 250 HUF per liter, in case of pre-packaged sweet snacks 100 HUF, while at snacks and condiments 200 HUF per kilogram.
The law will enter into force on the 1st of September – reports MTI.
